How to Create The Perfect Study Space

How to Create The Perfect Study Space

A key to effective study is having an ideal space in which to study. In this post I'll take you through the essentials of making the perfect study area for yourself.

🍄 Selecting an Area 🍄

This is the most important step. Place your study desk in a quiet, distraction-free area. What this means is that it should be far away from your TV, game console, bed, other people etc If you don't have a designated study desk you could try studying at the dining table or on the floor in a corner of the room (make it comfy; get a beanbag or cushions to sit on). Additionally, don't use your bed as your study space! It makes you feel relaxed (a little too relaxed) and lazy so as a result your alertness during your study session decreases or worse it makes you fall asleep during your work. A desk is ideal, especially when you're doing practice papers because it mimics how you'll be sitting during the actual exam. Conditioning yourself like this can help you feel more comfortable during the exam.

🍄 Lighting and Temperature 🍄

It might sound weird but lighting and temperature matter! They create an environment with comfort and ambiance. Basically, you don't want to be studying in a place that's too cold/has no heater access or too hot/no fan access. You want to have natural daylight if possible and use a soft, warm light for when it gets dark.

🍄 Desk Essentials 🍄

Desk essentials are all the things you need in order to study. These would be things like your reading material/books, notebooks, stationary, computer (if necessary) and even snacks. Before you start studying make sure you have everything on hand so you can avoid being distracted by the need to get up and retrieve them. Keep healthy snacks and water on your desk during study sessions to help keep your energy up.

🍄 Organisation Systems 🍄

This is optional but super helpful. Having drawers or trays as part of an organisation system will seriously help you in keeping your study zone free from clutter and have your essentials near by so you don't have to get up and find them.

🍄 Aesthetics 🍄

For all my visual lovers out there, I'm sure this one will resonate with you. By making your space aesthetically pleasing it can entice you to study and do your work. It can make the space feel more personal. Decorate with candles, pencil/pen holders and whatever else takes your fancy; as long as it isn't distracting. Put up motivational quotes around you to stay positive throughout your study sessions.

NOTE: Sometimes it might actually help if you change your study location. If the energy around your usual study space isn't very uplifting then you should definitely try re-locating. It might even help you build more neural pathways if you study different topics in different rooms. You can then create a mind-palace for yourself. Let's say you studied Biology in the living room, so during your exam you recall sitting there and taking in the sights of the room whilst learning about DNA; next thing you know it's easier to recall information because you've built several neural pathways connected to that topic.

I've included some pictures of my study space below to give you some inspiration!
