Motivation and Studying

How to Stay Motivated in the Long Term Sometimes the hardest part about studying is actually getting started. Once you get started you might start wondering how you're going to stay motivated enough to continue. The truth about motivation is that it comes and goes and that's why in the long term, you can't rely on motivation alone. So, how should you deal with this? 1. Write down your reasons for studying Ask yourself why you're doing this. What do you hope to achieve? Will studying help you achieve your dream? Are you studying to make someone proud? What do you love about studying the subject that you're currently studying? Remembering why you started studying can really motivate you. 2. Break it down Take everything you have to do and break it into smaller, more manageable tasks. Keep a list of all these tasks you have to do and as you tick off a task each time you complete it, you'll feel more accomplished and more motivated to keep goin...

The Feynman Technique

Image
Understanding Concepts with the Feynman Technique The Feynman Technique is named after Richard Feynman, a Nobel Prize winning physicist. This technique can help you learn pretty much anything as it tests your understanding of concepts. It comprises 4 main steps. 1     🌷    Pick a concept you've studied and write its name on top of a blank piece of paper.    🌷   On the page write down an explanation of the concept, in simple English. Write it as though you're teaching the concept to someone who has never studied it before. By doing this you'll come to see what you understand and where you have gaps in your knowledge. This will help pinpoint where you have trouble in understanding the concept.    🌷     Look over what you've pinpointed as weak in your understanding and review it. Go back to your books and study it until you're confident that you've learned it this time. Repeat step 2.    🌷   ...

Remembering What You Learn

How to Remember What You Learn As students, we put in the hours of studying and understanding our course work only for us to forget it. It can b e difficult to retain information, especially if it's new or without a deeper concept. Instead of spending hours trying to memorize something, here are a few ways to get the most out of fewer study sessions. Please note that you'l l have to incorporate these methods into a regular study routine in order for them to actually work.  ⛅️  Active Recall   ⛅️ “ Don’t confuse recognizing information with being able to recall it .” -  Adam Robinson, author of  What Smart Students Know. Recognizing and understanding terms used in an explanation is not enough to guarantee that you'll be able to recall the concept. This is called passive learning and it is not the most efficient way to study. When we listen to a lecture or read a textbook we are not actively using our brain to think about what we're being taught . W...

Time Management: Academics

Image
Time Management Have you ever gotten into a rut where you've got so much going on that you can't sit down to study? What you need to do is develop your time management skills. Here I'll discuss a few steps you can take to manage your time better and make room for your academics. 🌾 Evaluate  🌾 Step back and look at where your time goes. What do you invest your time in? Do you waste time between/after classes? Do you waste time talking excessively with friends/family? Is your commute to and from school/uni too long? Find out where most of your time goes. 🌾 Prioritise  🌾 Now that you know where most of your time goes, you need to prioritise. What do have to do? What can you put aside/sacrifice? During your academic year, you will have to give up some hobbies that aren't contributing to your academics. Breaks are necessary but don't let a break from your work turn into hours of wasted time. Prioritise. 🌾 Make a Schedule  🌾 Once you ...

How to Create The Perfect Study Space

How to Create The Perfect Study Space A key to effective study is having an ideal space in which to study. In this post I'll take you through the essentials of making the perfect study area for yourself.  🍄 Selecting an Area  🍄 This is the most important step. Place your study desk in a quiet, distraction-free area. What this means is that it should be far away from your TV, game console, bed, other people etc If you don't have a designated study desk you could try studying at the dining table or on the floor in a corner of the room (make it comfy; get a beanbag or cushions to sit on). Additionally, don't use your bed as your study space! It makes you feel relaxed (a little too relaxed) and lazy so as a result your alertness during your study session decreases or worse it makes you fall asleep during your work. A desk is ideal, especially when you're doing practice papers because it mimics how you'll be sitting during the actual exam. Conditioning...
